Friday- Sunday Western States Youth Gathering

Sunday, June 29, 2014

Wow, It's been a pretty busy past 3 days! On Friday we took the long trek from the church to California Lutheran University, where we were immediately put to work helping with set up and registration as part of our servant core duties. We had dinner on the lawn, then went straight back to work helping out with the general session. Afterwards we got to participate in the night life, which included s'mores, jolly jumps, and glow in the dark sports. It was a productive day.

On Saturday, we got to spend a lot more time participating. We had our second session, and after that we split off into a variety of workshops. We had 4 time slots to fill with interesting workshops, including workshops such as "Who am I (Really)?" where we discovered more about ourselves, "Don't You Quit" where some of our group participated in fun team building activities, "Mindful Moments" where some of us practiced yoga and meditation on the lawn, and many more. For dinner we were treated to a variety of food trucks, that had everything from Ben and Jerry's to grilled cheese to Wanchos (waffle fries covered in nacho toppings, actually pretty delicious). Afterwards we worked the evening general session and the gathering was treated to an Agape concert (Agape is a Lutheran rapper).

Finally, we have the events of today. Today was Sunday, the day of worship. We had our service learning day today, in which every church loaded onto buses and were taken to different churches and locations throughout Los Angeles. We were fortunate enough to travel to Pueblo De Dios, a Spanish speaking congregation located in Compton. We got on the bus with the intention of serving their congregation and community, and instead found ourselves being served by them. Their kindness and hospitality was amazing, and they welcomed us with open arms despite the language barrier!
